About,
Story of the film
“Gasoline Rainbow” is the story of five teenagers, Nathalie, Makai, Nicole, Tony, and Myka. All of them are from Wylie, a small town in Oregon, and are about to complete high school. But there is uncertainty about his future and he just wants to see the beach once.
So he boards a van and heads for the Pacific Coast, 513 miles away from his small town. On this journey, he smokes marijuana, listens to Enya’s music, and meets other people he meets along the way.
A true road trip film
“Gasoline Rainbow” is a true road trip movie. We see their homes only in glimpses, like school ID cards or leaving their childhood rooms. The rest is open roads, desolate cities, wind turbine fields, and riding a train.
Director brothers Bill Ross IV and Turner Ross have given the five teenagers no acting direction. So the conversations and actions between them feel authentic. We gradually get to know these characters, like someone’s father is an alcoholic, someone has faced racial discrimination.
But all these things do not become the main topic. The most impactful moments are when the five of them have silent conversations with each other or interact with people they meet along the way. His emotional and childlike behavior at times is a sight to behold.
The Beauty of the American West
The directors have also beautifully presented the beauty of the American West. Many shots of the film are like those on a postcard. These children walking along a line of wind turbines, their tiny figures running in the desert, or having a party near an old rickety ship.
While highlighting his small size, the directors have shown the strength of his personality and ideas. Where the music of Kerouac’s journey was jazz, these kids have both Biggie Smalls and Enya. This reflects his multicultural background.
Gasoline Rainbow: Symbol of young spirits
“Gasoline Rainbow” is a lively and smiling film. This is neither an idealized picture of Gen-Z nor does it present any misconceptions about them. The director’s style makes it a surreal experience.
I’m part of Gen-Z myself (albeit a big one) and I have certain beliefs about my generation, like internet savvy, mental health awareness, and political consciousness. But “Gasoline Rainbow” reminded me that there is another youth side – the courage and optimism to jump into the unknown and find yourself.
This film shows the hope and happiness that is hidden in young people. This is the reason why this film gives a warm and encouraging feeling. You too will see this in your life after watching this film.
