Beginning of the story
The story of the film begins when four friends meet in a mahjong/Chinese opera bar after receiving a secret message. This bar is run by their leader Nine Keks. These friends do not know much about each other because earlier they used to talk only on internet forums.
Increasing complications
However, as the story progresses, things get complicated. There is not just one but two suitcases and the other one contains a dead body that may still be alive! The thieves go by mahjong-themed names like Fortune and Chicken.
They sit around a hotpot table at the back of the opera and consider their options. The pace and rhythm of the film is irregular. It may seem crazy to compare one scene to another. But more importance has been given to the thrill of discoveries than the twists and turns.
Unraveling the story gradually
The story unravels slowly in this film, which is more than two hours long. Every new turn sets up the next turn but naturally. This isn’t a random suitcase full of loot and the person in the other bag isn’t a target either.
You must let the story cook at the same pace as it boils and boils. By the end of the film, what’s most impressive is not the completeness of the story but the integrity of its presentation.

Role of characters
The excellent dialogue between the four lead actors and director Fu (Tian Yu) sets this film apart from other recent films. The dialogue isn’t raised to the level of Tarantino’s dazzling literary dialogue. Rather, they are disjointed links in a continuously weaving chain of events.
The characters of this film not only talk but also perform for each other. They have secrets to share and they work well together, even if they are trampling each other. “Nothing Can’t Be Undone by a HotPot” has big escape room energy.
Interesting and funny dialogue
The film also has some excellent one-liners, like when Seventy Grand is shocked when he sees some loot lying around: “Poverty limited my imagination.” But what’s most fascinating about this film is the characters’ use of dialogue to make disappointing compromises.
I still remember a dialogue from the initial part of the movie when the group was thinking about Fu’s dead body. Seventy Grand says he’s going to be “cut to pieces.”
