Sight Movie Review
Intro
Sight, directed by Andrew Hyatt, is a shot movie inspired by the true story of Dr. Ming Wang, the renowned Chinese-American ophthalmologist. From his impoverished childhood as a child of the Cultural Revolution in China to his career as a successful doctor in Nashville, the documentary tells Dr. Wang’s story. Although it is safe in its predictable story, it is a feel-good story about faith, resilience, and helping one another out.
Dr. Ming Wang’s Journey
Shot in China and the United States, the movie cuts between two timeframes: Dr. Wang’s earlier years when he lived in China and his current life in the United States. In China, the story follows young Ming Wang (played by Ben Wang), who aspires to be a doctor like his father and grandfather. However, his plans are interrupted by the Cultural Revolution, and he has to leave the country after losing his first love, Lili (Sara Ye).
Dr. Wang (Terry Chen), hellbent on success, performs well enough in his studies to take first place at schools like MIT and Harvard. Ultimately, he opens a private practice focusing on the care of ocular diseases in Nashville.
Sight: Kajal’s Story
We find Dr. Wang in 2007, saving Kajal (Mia Swaminathan), a young Indian orphan who survived vicious abuse but, instead of justice, travelled to the United States for a chance to see again. Dr. Wang struggles (along with Dr. Misha Bartnovsky (Greg Kinnear)) endlessly to assist Kajal against all odds.
It is through these lenses that the film takes us on the journey of Dr. Wang and Kajal as they fight their battles and those of the medical world.

Themes and Performances
It’s entitled “Sight,” and it’s about hope, despair, and learning to let go. Explores immigration, trauma and the lasting effects it has had throughout a person’s whole life.
Some performances in the film waver a bit, but Mackenzie balances this with moments of excellence. Some of the film’s best sequences involve Terry Chen as one of Kinnear’s exhausted underlings, two men who tackle a shared problem with very different styles of troubleshooting. Very well done in a part that illustrates a profound sense of loss and heartbreak, making one believe in his heartbreak and his desire to search for the solution but being unable to face reality at a tender age orchestrated by Ben Wang as the youngest Dr. Wang.
Pacing and Script
The script, co-written by Andrew Hyatt, John Duigan and Buzz McLaughlin, lulls an additional touch, mired in Dr. Wang’s anguish, including in both timelines, as if unable to depart that until hasty resolve. This might turn off some viewers, but the pacing helps significantly when it comes to exploring the characters’ emotions.
Angel Studios and the movie Message
Reform — Angel Studios’ recent productions include “Sound of Freedom” and “Cabrini.” The movie starts with an “Angel Guild approves this message,” with “Angel Guild” being a nod to the studio’s subscriber base. The real Dr. Wang then actually shows up during the credits to do so much himself before asking that the audience pay it forward by following and scanning a QR code that would allow them to purchase tickets for future moviegoers and receive unique content as a reward.
While the film’s messages of faith and perseverance are heartening to hear, the heavy push to promote the studio rather than Dr. Wang’s actual nonprofit for sight restoration can potentially leave some audiences feeling at odds.
